Project Description

Project designed by Smith Edwards Architects of Hartford, CT.  Construction document development and construction oversight performed by URS Corporation of Rocky Hill, CT.  Paul Pizzo and Andrew Whitehouse of Landmark Architects were the project’s principal and assistant, respectively, during their tenures at URS.

The Breakthrough Magnet School is a 60,000 square foot Design/Build Pre-K through 8th grade school. This is the first Design / Build Magnet School in the state of Connecticut, via special legislation.  This is the first model project to test the ability to deliver a new public school using the Design / Build method of delivery.  To control escalating construction costs during construction, this school was designed and built using a preliminary program developed by the Capitol Region Education Council.
